exhausted childrenTeaching is hard work, exhausting, stressful and challenging.  The same can be said of learning.

In both instances though, the positives outweigh the negatives.  There are very few emotions that can beat watching a child (or adult) learn a new concept they thought was out of their reach.

In the same way, learning something you didn’t believe was possible gives the same wonderful sensation.

I was dismayed to hear of a home-schooling family who were using an online program to educate their two young children – not to supplement it but as the complete curriculum.

This doesn’t work!  Doing the same thing day in and day out doesn’t help the learning process no matter how exciting or innovative it was in the beginning.

Although there are some excellent online learning programs for children, they should be used in conjunction with other methods of teaching.

The worksheet has had some bad press in recent years and in some situations, understandably so.

On the other hand, the worksheet can be a life-saver if you need a few minutes quiet time without the constant interruptions of little voices needing help.

I was brought up in the ‘worksheet’ era and remember filling in pages of missing words, word searches, calculations and handwriting practice.

Nowadays, the worksheet is still out there but it has a rival.

Online learning for children is the new worksheet.  Only, it is more colourful and fun!

It is important to understand that worksheets and online learning programs are not stand alone teaching tools and they shouldn’t be used as such.  A worksheet cannot teach you how to be successful at completing long division calculations or how to have beautiful handwriting.

The worksheet is to practice the skills that have been learnt already.  The same goes for the online programs although some of the more interactive examples can be beneficial to some learning concepts.

They are not teacher substitutes but complement the teaching and learning process.

I have been researching these online learning programs and wanted to put some of my thoughts down here before publishing the reviews.

There are so many ways of learning and whatever your preferred learning style there is a way it can be accommodated.

There are hundreds of different ways to help someone to learn a concept but doing the same thing over and over again and hoping it works isn’t a useful teaching method.Einstein

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein quotes from BrainyQuote.com.

I decided to review some online learning programs for children to see if any stand out from the rest.
